Kinja'd!!!

My grandfather was robbed in the late 1970s by a group of armed men. They took the contents of the safe, jewellery, and the lives of his beloved guard dogs. He became so paranoid that he secretly bought and moved into another apartment up the road, believing it necessary to buy an identical 635CSi just to occupy his old parking space in order to fool people into thinking he still lived there. My mother and her siblings were not allowed to return home after school, instead they had to remain in the old apartment until he, under the cover of darkness, would clandestinely drive them all back to the new one.

My grandfather only ever bought a car if it had two doors and was a BMW. He even thought Mercs were far too flashy. To be seen in anything Italian would be, to him, the most uncomfortable statement of arrogance imaginable. He, in his time, owned: 2x BMW 2002 tii (one in Orange, one in yellow), BMW 323i, 2x BMW 325i, 3x BMW 635Csi (One in champagne, two in dark blue). Oh, and he had four kids.

I thought that that was worth sharing. Have any of you got any funny car stories?

That's not too funny. Where did all of this take place?

Back in the 70's? 80s? Makes perfect sense then. Kind of crazy things going on there. I love HK!

Grandpa had 3 635CSis. One was stolen (before the robbery), which was replaced immediately. Unfortunately we have sold them all.

He bought a new apartment in fear but had the kids go to the old one until after dark, to then drive them to the new apartment? Am I reading this right?

Why was your grandfather opposed of the redistribution of the means of production from the bourgeois to the proletariat?

My dad had an old 1969 Mach 1 Royal Maroon car 351W FMX, sold it to his neighbor w/o the engine he would up scrapping the car, but kept the title and all the vin tags from the car...fast forward 35 years, same neighbor comes over while we are working on his childhood home and asks him if he wants his car back. He's like what? He tells us all this and said he will see if he can find it because he had just moved and doesn't know where they are, but it's kinda neat he still has them stashed away somewhere. The OG car is gone but my dad and I are thinking down the road if we get the tags, get a dyncorn body and bring it back from beyond the scrapper.

This is a man who bought another car in EXACTLY the same specifications to pretend he was living in a place he wasn't living in. So yes, you did read that right. Also there were Dobermanns and Alsatians.

It's a long story. It involves a bald dictator, Revolution, loss, a tortured mother, and a burning manor house. Go figure.

Knifed the Alsatians (one in the throat, one in the back), sharpei got it in the eye. Fortunately the Doberman was on the balcony, so escaped harm.

I've told this one before, so forgive me.

A cocky, young USAF Lieutenant pulls his shiny sports car into the apartment complex parking lot to pick up his blind date. He finds a spot around the side of the building, and struts on up to the front door.

As he picks up his date and they walk back towards sports car, they pass by a car he noticed on his way in. It's a ratty old station wagon with mismatched hubcaps, dents in most the fenders - a real eyesore.

As they walk by the wagon, he stops and opens the passenger door for her. He looks at her and says, "So, how do you like my car??"

As expected, she looks at him confused and almost disappointed. As he opens his mouth to laugh, shrug off the punchline vehicle, and point to his flashy car, she says... "But... that's my car..."

It was 1964, it was a Series 1 E-type roadster, and that's how my parents met.

Thank you for sharing that story. Sounds like he might have suffered PTSD from that home invasion pretty bad. It's not fun to live with, amazing the lengths he went to avoid that situation again. Awesome that he continued to enjoy such nice cars!

I was in HK in '86 for a bit. Seems like back then most cars were mercedes, rolls royces and those red taxis. Were bmw very popular then or was he more of a trendsetter with them?

Well, it almost did, but I think some building got in the way.

Went out to dinner with Mom tonight. Two things happened that day in June '66

1) The tornado took the jag

2) He proposed earlier that day
